I’m a huge fantasy fan, and it greatly delights my heart to read fantasies set here in Nigeria. There are so few out there and even fewer that are done right. This book gave me a lot “Akata Witch” vibes in the sense that a group of friends go on an unchaperoned adventure to stop a big bad from bringing down evil on the world.

I loved it very much and finding out that the author wrote this at only 18 makes it even more amazing.

It’s a middle grade read, with the main character being 13, and her friends being around that age as well. I enjoyed reading about Annabelle and her adventures, and I loved seeing her come into her power. At the start of the story, we get introduced to Annie’s struggle with her nightmares and how her nightmare literally came to life. The book is very fast-paced and I was done with it within 3 hours, on a trip from Ajah to Iyana Ipaja (thank you Lagos traffic). In a couple of chapters, the quest was underway.

The world-building was superb and at times came off as super fantastical. There was a slew of mythical creatures. There were many battle scenes in this book, and each one with written in vivid detail, and it wasn’t hard to imagine the scenes play out in front of you.

As for character development, I feel Annabelle is the only one who grew as a character, and the other characters (maybe with a tiny exception for Zoe) were the same for most of the book. Zoe was a mostly unlikeable character and for most of the book, I kept rolling my eyes and feeling bad for her friends who were stuck with her. Some things happened in the book and I was like “of course, it had to be Zoe”.

This was very enjoyable and I highly recommend it!
